AGI will land in 2026. We still have a chance to make it good for humanity.
Anthropic’s Dario Amodei wrote on 29.1.2025 that artificial intelligence will surpass human capabilities in practically everything by 2026 or, at the latest, 2027. This will only require continuing development at the current pace.
The race to AGI is on, and the speed of change is insane. So far, Europe has only been a bystander. To avoid severe consequences, our societies must adapt way, way faster than they have historically been able to.
We now stand at a precipice, looking at the abyss. But it doesn’t have to look dark.
If we act quickly and decisively, open-source artificial intelligence can help us develop a new AI-centric public services model, avert a disaster, and make the upcoming AGI beneficial for all of humanity.
And this is the real chance for Europe to rise and shine.
Europe is now almost the last bastion of democracy, so we must act now and build AIs that provide all essential public services, including healthcare, education, and social welfare, before we run out of time and money to do so.
We can’t let entrenched interests and bureaucratic regulators hinder or slow this development. We must see the big picture and act now.
Our principal goal must be free public services for everyone. Healthcare, education, food, and shelter must be seen as fundamental human rights, not privileges for a few. AGI will allow us to do it, even without the current public funding model.
This is the kind of leadership humanity needs and Europe should take.
We Europeans can do it, but we need a sense of urgency and a burning desire to do it. We need to move fast, much faster than we are used to. Technology has massively improved the human condition so far, and we must ensure we continue on that trajectory.
